High on a hill above scenic Buffalo Creek, 10 minutes from the city of Lexington, on 36 acres with wonderful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Applewood Inn offers accomodations in a very private and beautiful setting.
The passive solar home, built in 1979, is furnished with antiques, quilts and original artwork, and the massive enclosed porches on the south side afford wonderful year-round views of the surrounding woods, pastures grazed by llamas, and the distant mountains.
The unique three level design allows for four queen-bedded guest rooms. On the ground level are two guest rooms, each with private baths and fireplaces; one with whirlpool tub and the other with priority usage of the hot-tub room, which opens through french doors onto a patio overlooking the hillside. Both have small private porches outside the room. On the second level are two more rooms opening onto the largest porch, each with private bath and one with whirlpool tub and fireplace. Also on this level are the common room with fireplace, library and satellite TV with VCR, the dining room, main kitchen, guest pantry, and off the east end a lovely in-ground pool and patio. Breakfast is truly a movable feast and may be served in the dining room, on one of the porches or in the large Inn kitchen. The breakfast menu usually includes many heart-healthy dishes such as Gingered Peach Souffle or Multi-grain Waffles, fresh fruit and fresh baked bread or muffins served with homemade preserves. A hot water dispenser and huge selection of beverages to go with it is available to guests any time of the day or night. Guests who want to sleep late may arrange for a continental breakfast to be left outside the room on the porch. A special feature of the Inn is a guided two hour llama trek with optional picnic lunch. For an extra charge guests may hike with these fascinating animals while enjoying the gorgeous views. The Inn's 36 acres are surrounded by an additional 900 acres with miles of hiking and riding trails. Wildflower and bird watching treks are available in March, April and May. Foliage treks are great in the fall and winter treks afford the most spectacular views of the mountains. Guests may also bring their own horses and board them at a nearby farm, then ride the endless trails. There is access to Buffalo Creek for trout and bass fishing just down the driveway. Nearby, one can go canoeing on the Maury and James Rivers. The Appalachian Trail and two National Forests provide additional hiking, and the Blue Ridge Parkway and many scenic backroads in Rockbridge County provide a way to view the area's beauty for the less athletically inclined. Applewood is located on a state maintained dirt road just off Route 11, minutes south of Historic Downtown Lexington, where guests may tour the colleges, shops, Civil War museums and galleries on foot or take a carriage ride along the lovely old streets. Also in Lexington are the Virginia Horse Center with weekly year round events, and Lime Kiln Theater (summer only). Within an easy drive are Roanoke with its historic Market Square and Railroad Museum, and Staunton with the Museum of American Frontier Culture and the Woodrow Wilson House. On the way to Staunton are the Rockbridge Winery, Wade's Mill and the Cyrus McCormick Museum. Three night Dinner Packages are available that include three nights lodging, dinner on Sunday, a llama trek and in room flowers. Discounts are also available for multiple night midweek stays.
